Sidelift vehicle safely handles long loads
Handling long and delicate items- serviceable and nonserviceable helicopter blades, tailbooms, and various large helicopter components-challenged the operators of conventional forklifts at the Defense Distribution Depot in Corpus Christi, Tex. But a sidelift vehicle has provided a handling solution to the Depot's problem.

Previously, moving these helicopter parts was a time consuming operation. It required extensive forklift operator manpower and forklifts as well as the use of flatbed trucks for loading and unloading and transporting the helicopter components. To load helicopter blades into a building, for example, the conventional forklift operator had to make multiple movements to angle the blade ends properly through the building door. Because loads were carried on the front of the forklift, moreover, visibility-and thus handling safety-was an added concern.

Now, however, the operator of a sidelift vehicle has exceptional visibility forward because a long load is carried on a side deck. Moving long blades through doors no longer is a problem.

The sidelift vehicle moves swiftly, too. It can travel throughout the military storage facility at a top loaded speed of 18 miles per hour. Maximum load capacity for the vehicle (model SF 40U) selected for use at this Depot is 8,800 pounds. Loads can be lifted to a height of 157 inches, moreover.

Switching to the sidelift vehicle significantly reduces equipment cycle times for the Depot. Forklift manpower can be dedicated to other handling tasks, moreover, adding to productivity benefits.
