Caterpillar Inc. has unveiled its first on-highway truck at a special media preview at CONEXPO, the mining expo running from Tuesday through Saturday in Las Vegas.
Caterpillar will display the CT660 vocational truck in six different body types, such as dump, refuse, hauler and mixer at the expo, said spokeswoman Kate Kenny.
While the truck will be produced at Caterpillar's plant in Garland, Texas, transmissions will be manufactured at Building KK in East Peoria, she said.
Kenny said details on what the truck transmission production means for employment in East Peoria were not yet available.
Speaking from CONEXPO, Kenny said the initial reaction to the new truck had been extremely positive. "I think it will be a great producer for Caterpillar."
In a prepared release, Caterpillar Vice President Steve Gosselin noted, "This is an exciting and historic milestone for us. The CT660 is a natural expansion of our product line and a perfect complement to other Cat equipment."
Production of Cat's new truck will begin after CONEXPO for customer delivery later this year, he said in the release.
"We are going to have a full line of vocational trucks that will be customizeable to customers' needs," said George Taylor, director of Caterpillar's on-highway truck group.
"Our design team paid extremely close attention to all of the customer input we gathered.
"Caterpillar will deliver a new line of vocational trucks that our customers said they want and need: trucks that are built with the ideal specs and options for customers to choose from to create customized trucks that match their specific applications and work environments."
Engine options for the CT660 include the Cat CT11, CT13 and CT15 - with horsepower ratings from 330 to 550. The engines are designed specifically for vocational applications, yielding optimum horsepower/torque combinations, while providing customers the flexibility to match power and performance to specific applications and operating conditions.
