Jeep introduces off-road camper trailer
Consider this another bit of fresh breath for the storied Jeep brand: Chrysler has announced that it will be the first original equipment maker to build and sell a camper trailer that’s as off-road capable as the vehicles it makes to tow the things.

The trailers feature a pop-up tent, storage compartment and plenty of ground clearance via its pair of all-terrain tires. The units are made to sleep four adults and feature a queen-size bed, sofa, stowable table and 110-volt power supply. Two versions of the trailers will be offered when they go on sale in August. The Jeep Trail Edition will cost $9,995 and features 12 inches of ground clearance and 32-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain Tires. For the “hard-core off-road enthusiasts,” Jeep says, there is the Jeep Extreme Trail Edition, with an MSRP of $11,995. That version boasts 15 inches of ground clearance, 35-inch tires, skid plate and higher fenders. The trailers will be available for order as an official Mopar accessory at local Jeep dealerships, Chrysler said in announcing the new products.(More locally, Jeep is also offering Orange County fair-goers a chance to try out the new Grand Cherokee on an off-road course.)“The Jeep brand is widely known for providing its customers with a sense of freedom and adventure, with a mix of vehicles to take them wherever they want to go,” Mike Manley, president and CEO of the Jeep Brand, said in announcing the trailers.“Thanks to our friends at Mopar, the Jeep experience may now be taken to a new level. Families may hook up an off-road Jeep camper to their capable Jeep vehicle and enjoy an ultimate outdoor adventure that no other manufacturer can offer.”For those wanting to further up the ante, Mopar is offering accessories for the trailers themselves, such as tail-light guards, a 10-foot by 10-foot awning, and  360-degree rotating axis hitch for better maneuvering and articulation. The campers weigh 850 pounds for the regular version and 1,050 for the “extreme” one. While Chrysler says the 110-volt power inverter can provide cooking, heating, cooling and entertainment options, there is no dedicated range, sink or toilet in these things.Regarding that latter, that means when nature comes calling while you’re in the wild, you’ll still have to find your own way to answer.
