INDUSTRIAL Conveying (ICA) says companies can modernise processes without going through costly and logistically-challenging relocations.

Many product importers tend to handle huge quantities of stock manually because of outdated materials handling systems.
ICA says another problem is many materials handling solutions involve plants with processing systems for only a few different items en masse, even though some businesses handle thousands of types of items.
To improve productivity, a complete modernisation of the materials handling system is often the only solution. The process can help reduce multi-handling and turn low efficiency sorting plants into high efficiency operations.

To avoid relocating, many companies need the re-engineering to be completed as quickly as possible with minimum disruption to business. According to ICA, it is possible to mount the system in the ceiling space to exploit previously unused space.

This can also reduce the amount of equipment occupying floor space, making for a more spacious plant. Modernised systems can use a combination of conveyors, carousel sorting technology, labelling and RFID technology.
