Caterpillar release 24M Motor Grader

Caterpillar has recently launched the 24M, the company`s newest addition to the M series of motor graders. The largest model in the series, the 24M has an operating weight of 62.46t and uses a blade 7.3m wide. The 24M’s 18.1l Cat C18 ACERT engine produces 397kW and generates 2,389Nm maximum torque. The grader is designed for maintaining haul roads for trucks with capacities of 172 short tons or more.

For easy control, the grader features a pair of multi-axis joysticks that replace the steering wheel and nine control levers used in the 24H, the previous model. Caterpillar claims that the joystick control system can reduce hand and arm movement by nearly 80%, promoting higher productivity from less-fatigued operators. The system also makes operator training much quicker and simpler.

The 24M features heavy-duty construction of mainframes, articulation hitch, drawbar, circle and moldboard. The drive train uses a durable electronically controlled, 6F/3R planetary powershift transmission, lock-up torque converter, modular rear axle and multi-disc hydraulic brakes at each tandem wheel.

To enhance safety, Cat has equipped the 24M with an operator-presence system, which automatically sets the parking brake and neutralises hydraulic functions if the operator leaves the cab without setting the brake. Also, with the push of a button, the operator can activate the return-to-centre feature, which automatically aligns the frames when the machine is articulated. The optional Work Area Vision System provides added visibility via a rearview camera and a colour monitor in the cab. Service points are grouped to speed up maintenance work, and the fast fuel option allows refueling in less than two minutes.
