Vermont and New Hampshire transportation officials say heavy trucks will be banned and other traffic restricted from a troubled bridge between the states beginning next week.

Inspectors have found significant corrosion on the Route 4 bridge over the Connecticut River between Lebanon, N.H., and White River Junction, Vt..

They plan to ban heavy trucks and implement alternating one-way traffic for other vehicles, starting Monday. More restrictions may come after further inspections.

Truckers are being advised to seek alternate routes, including the nearby Interstate 89 bridges.

The Route 4 bridge was built in 1936 and rebuilt in 1976. It is scheduled to be replaced in 2010 and is on New Hampshire's "Red List," which requires frequent inspections because of known deficiencies.
